Background
The historical town of Bilgram is situated in Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at Hardoi- Kanpur road. Bilgram, as history reveals, has given many scholars and people renowned for their academic skills. There are many successful collectors, ministers, shayars, singers, professors, authors, historians who belong to the land of Bilgram and have contributed to the welfare and upliftment of the nation. Syed Ali Bilgrami, being one of such prominent personalities, was a professor of Marathi, Arabic and Sanskrit language at Cambridge University in 1902 who had command over 18 languages. He was also minister of different portfolios in the Nizam government of Hyderabad
Most of Bilgram’s prominence is now a matter of the past. People of Bilgram do not lack in spirit and intelligence but Bilgram today has an average literacy rate of below 50% which is lower than the national average of 59.5%. The abysmal literacy rate, especially amongst the minorities, women and backward classes is due to lack of infrastructure i.e. quality educational institutions, basic foundation and proper educational facilities, which should be at par with the best available in bigger cities and metros. Migration from Bilgram to other cities, for seeking quality and proper education has further discouraged the natives to gain education. Great thinkers and reformers wisely said, “a well-educated woman is the backbone of the society and the pillar of her home”.
Thus, the need of the hour is to create a Neo-Bilgram, where everyone especially girls get proper education so as to change the future of this “once a city of rich glory”.
Local Feedback
“We visited several villages near Bilgram, and parents shared their excitement about GMIS opening in the area. They’re especially pleased that their children will now have access to quality education close to home.”
